Book review | Roosevelt Banks and the Attic of Doom by Laurie Calkhoven

Review:

This is a children’s middle grade fiction book. There’s humor, friendships, family drama, new baby/ big brother issues, and ghosts.

Roosevelt is a 10 year old boy who is excited about his summer with his dad. That is until he finds out he is going to be a big brother again and now has to move into the attic.

Roosevelt has strong feelings about not moving into the attic with all it’s ghosts. He try’s to convince his parents that it would be a bad idea. When that doesn’t work he enlists his friends to help him figure out a way.

His friends are not always so nice. There are dares and threats of being called a chicken. This is a pretty realistic story that children will likely relate to.

This would be a great one for boys since there is a group of boys and the main character is a boy! If you have a elementary/middle grade child then this might be something for them. A great read for the holiday season or if your child is going to be a big brother/sister.

Mini Book Review | The Golden Acorn by Katy Hudson

This is such a cute children’s book about friendship and what it means.

Squirrel is excited about this years acorn hunt race. Squirrel has won it for the last eight years in a row. However, when squirrel sees that this years event will be a team effort and is not able to do it alone Squirrel takes her friends offer to join in for a team effort this year.

Squirrel is fast and just wants to go go go. Once she reaches the Golden Acorn, she realizes that she can’t do it alone and really does need her friends to win this race.

She realizes the value of a team that sticks together and gets to their destination together. Knowing how great it is to accomplish some thing on ones own is great but as Squirrel learns here, sometimes we need others to get achieve our goals.

The illustrations in this book are beautiful. I love the foliage.

This is an excellent story to teach children about teamwork and friendship. I would encourage teacher, parents, caregivers, grandparents to all pick this one up for the children in their lives to help build that much needed skill of teamwork.

Mini Book Review | Where Snow Angels Go by Maggie O’Farrell

This is such a sweet tale of how one little girl finds out about snow angels. She is not supposed to see her snow angel but she does. Snow angels are created when you make a snow angel and the snow melts and evaporates up to the sky. Snow angels are not supposed to be able to be seen my humans. They are supposed to always watch over you to help when you are in danger. Somehow, something went wrong this time.

I loved listening to the narration done by Ruth Negga. Ruth did an excellent job at portraying this tale and had me absorbed. I absolutely loved it!

This is a great book for children and adults alike. I would recommend this to everyone. If you love tales of powers watching over us, angels, snow, children’s love for their parents, worry/fear for others and a wonderful narrator that envelops you into the story then definitely check out this book by Maggie O’Farrell.

Wrapped Up in Christmas Hope

Image sourced from Goodreads of book cover for Wrapped Up in Christmas by Janice Lynn featuring a Hallmark Publishing seal.

Review:

Morgan is a single mom to a bright young five year old. She moved to town to be close to her family after she got laid off from her nursing job. She finds it hard not to worry about every little thing after her husband died trying to reach the summit a few years ago. This close knit community is everything Morgan needs right now.

Andrew is a local firefighter who wants to switch to fighting wild fires in California. He knows what he wants and because of that he knows he isn’t looking for anything serious. He couldn’t do that to someone. That is also why he doesn’t date women who have children. He doesn’t want to hurt them if things don’t work out.

Morgan and Andrew find themselves questioning their promises to themselves about relationships. With some wise words, these two may just learn a few things.

This is such a lovely read. I listened to the audio of this narrated by Madeleine Maby and Seth Podowitz and became completely immersed in this story. I really thought Andrew was the perfect guy. While he is a play boy with an adventure streak, he is also kind and just lovable.

I also loved the old veteran in the story. The addition to the contribute to veterans was a highlight for me. I know that all those men and women who serve or have served this great country are heros. Thank you to Janice Lynn for including this in the wonderful Christmas story.

This is a Hallmark movie and it definitely gives you those Hallmark vibes. I actually had to look it up to see if there was a movie for this. There is! Now I want to watch it!

So, if you love those Hallmark fluff movies that make you feel all warm inside then this is definitely one to pick up. There are veterans, a wedding, Christmas, humor, romance, grief, and more. I did cry at the end but I am a cryer when it comes to books and movies.

Book Review | The Secret Halloween Costume by Sophie Vaillancourt

This one I have mixed feelings about. I really love the illustrations by Karin Dupuis. The idea that the girl doesn’t want to do things like everyone else thinks they should be is ok.

However, I dislike the idea of turning traditions into bad things. Many traditions are there to remember where you come from or to bring the family closer together and I think they should be a good thing. Teaching little ones that traditions are bad are not really a good thing. I do think that families and people can outgrow a tradition though.

I would recommend pairing this with a book that talks about how traditions are good and how to create a tradition of your own or at least having a discussion about traditions as a whole. Children need to see the good as well as the bad. Otherwise, they may begin to think that traditions, as a whole, are bad.

In addition, this book also has a silent message to go against your parents. While I think that would be a stupid thing for a parent to go against, I also do not condone children being encouraged to disobey their parents, subtle as it may be.

If you disregard the traditions and going against your parents issues then this book is pretty cute and teaches that it’s alright to do things differently from everyone else. That is a message I think is great. Children need to learn that they don’t always have to do what everyone else does.

Overall, I would recommend this book for youngsters for Halloween time. This is a book written by a woman with a female lead who goes against the grain.

Book Review | Christmas in Evergreen: Bells Are Ringing by Lacey Baker

This is the 4th book in the Christmas in Evergreen series by Lacey Baker. Although, I read it as a standalone and was able to get along without having read the other three books in the series. I will likely be tracking the others down as well so to experience more of Evergreen this season.

Hannah has fallen in love with her best friend. They both begin new projects but at what cost?

Everything seems perfect. Hannah and Elliot are in love. Her brother is getting married and while she has a lot on her plate she finally takes up something that she’s passionate about, the Evergreen Christmas Museum.

This is what she has been looking for without even knowing it. As soon as she heard about this project it filled her with joy. She is determined to make it a success. But how is she going to do everything else she does and her passion project. She soon learns she can’t do it all and she will have to choose what has to go.

Meanwhile, Elliot has a project of his own he hasn’t mentioned to Hannah. She finds out by accident and the two are sent on a journey of what their paths will mean for them.

I listened to Kathleen McInernay’s narration of this story. It was a wonderful tale of what it truly means to love someone and what you have to be willing to do if you are going to give it your all. I really enjoyed listening to this book. Kathleen did an excellent job narrating.

The side characters were wonderful and Hannah’s family felt realistic even though I didn’t care for her sister much. Her friends and community makes you feel that warm, cozy, loved vibe. I would recommend this to anyone that love a sweet, romantic, love story set at Christmas time. This includes a grinch and someone that just wants to bring the magic of Christmas to everyone, Evergreen’s very own adult Cindy Lou Who.

Book Review | Born Wicked by Jessica Spotswood

This is the first book in The Cahill Witch Chronicles by Jessica Spotswood.

Kate is tasked with looking after her sisters Tess and Mora after her mother is gone. Their mother wanted her to protect them. No one and nothing is safe with their abilities. They must hide them well.

Kate can manipulate peoples thoughts. Tess can manipulate the seasons and loves spring and cooking.

There father is leaving for a while and decides a governess is needed. Kate is told she needs to marry or join the sisterhood. Both the sisterhood and the brotherhood is not safe. They are taught to be subservient to there fathers, brotherhood and later their husbands.

Kates old friend and crush, Paul, is back in town. Is he there to court her. She doesn’t have much time to choose. If he does, will he wish her to move away from her sisters. This is something she can’t do. She is supposed to protect her sisters and she can’t do that if she isn’t even around.

A strange letter from her mother’s friend comes and tells to find her mother’s journal to find some answers since she can’t be there to guide them as she should. The letter insists they are in danger but doesn’t elaborate.

Tess and Nora are great trials for Kate. She is fearful and pragmatic sister because of her duty to protect them.

Elena, the new governess, shows up and gets the girls out into society. Kates big dilemma is looming and she doesn’t know what to do. Does she love Paul? Could she really leave her sisters? The sisterhood?

Then enters Phen and the attention of the brotherhood. They inform Kate of her looming birthday and that she must choose the sisterhood and a husband. If she does not have a suitable husband in mind then they will decide for her.

Kate is upset that she has even less time to decide what to do than she thought. What will she end up choosing and why?

I listened to this on audio narrated by Nicole Suhaus. I really enjoyed listening to her voice this. She did an excellent job.

This was a great story that I can’t wait to start the next book in this series. If you enjoy stories of witches, family, tragic love, friendship, betrayal, female lead, female author, or books about duty to ones family then you should pick this one up.

Book Review | Murder by the Bookend by Laura Gail Black

Review:

This cozy mystery is the second in Laura Gail Black’s Antique Bookshop Mystery series. However, I had not read the first book prior to reading this one so it can be read as a standalone. I will be checking out the first book though.

Once again the little bookshop Twice Upon a Time is a hot spot due to a murder. This time the murder of the local library’s Director of Antique Books occurs in a parking lot near the bookshop after the party owner Jenna hosts to celebrate the grand reopening. This party is only for those on her uncles list of those willing to pay top dollar for rare books.

After the murder, the victim’s dog is found and Jenna takes on while she tries to find a shelter for him. With the grand reopening and the care of this dog, Jenna is low on time but seems to find herself in the middle of this investigation.

When she crosses paths with a detective that seems to have it out for her, she becomes determined to find out who the killer is before she ends up behind the target suspect with this detective. With the help of her boyfriend and detective she sets out to do just that. Will she find out who the killer is before she upsets them by snooping around to, getting to close and finding herself on next on the killers list?

This was definitely worth the read. I really enjoyed the sleuthing. Jenna and her friends are great but the interesting encounters with her suspects and the situations she finds herself in really kept me interested. I will be keeping my eye out for the next book in this series.

Book Review | A Spell of Rowans by Byrd Nash

Vic returns to her hometown after her mother’s death. Her siblings and her have secrets wrapped in their childhood memories. She escaped but not all of them did.

Now that she returns she must unravel all that has happened since she’s been gone. The death of her mother and her assistant happening on the same day raises suspicion. Then, there is the death of her father all those years ago.

With the whole town thinking that their family was strange and bad always follows the Rowans, Vic must try to out what happened. Someone seems to want her gone and threats like a rock being thrown through the window make her want to find out whats been going on even more.

I enjoyed this story, With so many new details being unraveled, it was able to keep me interested. The powers that this family has is very interesting.

There are some elements that might turn others off. There is talk of child abuse, blackmail, and of course, murder.

If you enjoy mysteries, supernatural, magic, family drama, and blackmail then this is definitely worth a read!

Book Review | Once Upon a Seaside Murder by Maggie Blackburn

Once Upon. Seaside Murder is the second book in the Beach Reads Mystery series by Maggie Blackburn. However, I read this as a stand alone and I don’t feel like I was missing anything due to it.

This was just an alright book for me. I’m giving it three stars. Once Upon. Seaside Murder is the second book in the Beach Reads Mystery series by Maggie Blackburn. However, I read this as a stand alone and I don’t feel like I was missing anything due to it.This was just an alright book for me. I wasn’t fond of Summer. She was rather annoying.

However, the mystery aspect of this story was good. There were many twists I didn’t see coming and for a cozy mystery it was more in depth. This seemed more like darker, heavier vibe then I expected for a Christmas setting. There was no Christmas feel to this story for me. For me a Christmas tale definitely needs more merriment. Summer has more of a bring-me-down vibe. I would say this was more about the mystery than the characters for me. If you enjoy mysteries, cozy or otherwise, then you might enjoy this.

Book Review | Little Thieves by Margaret Owen

This is the story of Vanja and how she goes from orphan to maid to thief. The deceptions she must pull to achieve her goals are many but there are those who seek her.

She steals the wrong item and is cursed with becoming the jewels she so desires. She will only have a short time to make things right before she becomes jewels forever. Will she make it in time?

She could just give in and choose which Godmother she would like to serve for the rest of her days and be done with this curse but will she when the whole reason for stealing is to get away from them in the first place?

I really enjoyed this story. There were so many things to keep me interested. While there are relationships and a love interest, this book has so much more to offer and wasn’t consumed with the romance aspect.

Check it out if you enjoy magic, gods, and betrayal.

Mini Book Review | The Accident Season by Moira Fowley-Doyle

A story of accidents that befall a family every year, always around the same time. The siblings hide what accidents and injuries they can from their mother but they are all hiding things from one another.

A girl that seems to be in the pictures of this family, even when they’re away on vacation. How is Elsie in them? Sometimes just her hair or arm but she always seems to be there. She was a childhood friend but she is in pictures after they stopped hanging out. When Cara goes looking for her, Elsie is not at school. So the hunt begins for Elsie in order to find out this mystery.

As this family continues on with life secrets will be revealed and accidents will befall them.

This was an interesting read for sure. There were so many things going on and this family is strange. Check it out if you like the creepy vibe and the strange along with drama amongst family and friends.

Mini Book Review | Keep Me Close by Jane Holland

This was so good. I love reading stories like this! There are so may whys with this story.

“Come on Kate!” is what I found myself saying often. Some of the things she does really just makes me want to slap her. That is one thing I hate about this book. Kate is one of those dumb typical girls in a horror film that does the stupidest thing. You know the ones. Urrrggg! I have to say that is one of my pet peeves.

I knew who it was the whole time. I just didn’t have the right reason why. Although, I wasn’t far off.

To have someone you love and are caring for being mistreated is horrific. It is always the loved one everyone suspects but did Kate really do it?

I gave this one 4 stars because of the predictability but I can enjoy a book when I know who the killer is. I like the other details; the hows and whys of the stories. It is definitely worth a read.

Mini Book Review | How to Catch the Easter Bunny by Adam Wallace

I love the vibrant colors in this book and children will too. The illustrations by Andy Elkerson are so cute.
This has E.B. (The Easter Bunny) and he is delivering treats to all the children that have the Easter spirit. There are a few ways that he is going to be trapped. Or that’s what the children think when rigging up these traps. However, E.B. is to smart for that. So next year E.B. will return to deliver your treats again.
